Do you need a permit?
In more than 28 states, you no longer need a permit to carry a concealed handgun if you're legally allowed to own one. Permitless (constitutional) carry states include Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, and many others. Even in these states, obtaining a voluntary permit is wise for reciprocity when traveling.
Choosing a carry gun
The best carry gun is the one you'll actually carry every day. A full-size pistol may shoot better but rarely gets carried. The most popular carry guns are compact 9mm pistols like the Glock 43X, Sig P365, Springfield Hellcat, and Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus — all offering 10–15 rounds in a package small enough for all-day carry.
Holster selection
Never carry without a proper holster that fully covers the trigger guard. Inside-the-waistband (IWB) holsters are the most concealable. Kydex molded holsters offer excellent retention and don't collapse when you reholster. Avoid Uncle Mike's-style soft holsters for carry — they can fold into the trigger guard.
Training and practice
A carry permit is a minimum standard, not a proficiency certification. Train regularly — dry fire daily at home, live fire monthly at minimum. Learn to draw from concealment, present the pistol on target, and make accurate shots under stress. Consider taking a defensive handgun course from a qualified instructor.
