First-Time Gun Buyer's Complete Guide
Everything you need to know before buying your first firearm. Read the guide and explore related products at Apollo Wholesale Club.
What's the right first gun?
The most common answer: a 9mm handgun or a .22 LR rifle. A 9mm handgun is versatile — suitable for self-defense, range shooting, and carry. A .22 LR is cheaper to shoot (often $0.05/round vs $0.25+), which means you'll practice more and learn faster. Many experienced shooters recommend starting with a .22, then moving to a centerfire handgun.
New vs used firearms
New firearms come with a factory warranty and known history. Used (pre-owned) firearms can be excellent deals — many have barely been fired. Apollo sells curated pre-owned firearms that have been inspected for function and safety. For a first-time buyer, either can be appropriate depending on budget.
Safety first
Every new gun owner should complete a basic firearms safety course before shooting. The four fundamental rules: 1) Treat every gun as if it's loaded. 2) Never point it at anything you're not willing to destroy. 3) Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. 4) Know your target and what's beyond it.
What else do you need?
Beyond the firearm: a secure storage solution (gun safe or lock box — required by law in some states), eye protection, ear protection, cleaning kit, and ammunition. Apollo carries all of these. Wholesale Club members save on every purchase.
The buying process
For first-time buyers, the process is straightforward: choose your firearm, complete a federal background check (Form 4473) at your local FFL, wait for NICS approval (usually instant), and take your firearm home. In most states, there is no waiting period for handguns, though some states require 3–14 days.
